You didn't like the idea a pod or two ago, but surely eating Simmons's salary to get Bridges on the cheap would be a great outcome (if you didn't have to give any of the firsts).

- BS and MB both improve the defence, athleticism and rebounding

- MB is obviously a great fit

- Still have draft picks to use on the roster

- Tell BS he's not the point guard (except in the second unit teams) and that Maxey is definitely the closer

- Nurse's coaching may get something new out of Simmons's athleticism and passing

- BS expires in a year, so even he's terrible or doesn't play it opens you up for a next year's free agency or a deadline salary filler

When people talk about getting assets at their lowest value, they don't come much lower than Simmons!

Do you pee in the shower? If yes (and I know you do), do you adjust your habits when staying outside of your own home? For example, staying in a friend's house, what's your approach?

truly never once in my life even been tempted to do this

I know it’s an impossible question but on a scale of: Not at All to Almost certain

How confident are you that Daryl will accomplish building a coherent contender this off-season.

slightly more confident than not

With seemingly every team chasing stars and the rising max/super max contracts, do you see some teams try to pivot to fill out their roster with a more balanced distribution of contract size between players? So try to get a bunch of good players to fill out your roster without having anyone making over $30m per year. Sure, it’s hard to do, but with so many teams up again the luxury tax, it seems like there would be opportunities to try this approach.

If they already have 1-2 elite players on their roster? Sure. If they don't, I don't think any team would do this except out of necessity / lack of availability for the top guys.

My big question is: What if this playoffs is the best Embiid will ever be in the playoffs? Would that change who you prioritize in the offseason? Feels like a good article idea 🤞🤞

Expand full comment

I don't think there's any reasonable/practical approach to this offseason that doesn't start from a baseline of Embiid and Maxey being a good enough 1-2 (or 2-1) to compete for a championship

What's the maximum amount you'd be willing to go on Melton? I certainly want him back if he's healthy, but I'm thinking anymore than a $5-ish million, one-year prove-it deal is crazy. If someone wants to hand him a bag, godspeed sir.

Backs are tough. Honestly I have no idea how to value him because of it.

What role player targets do you like for the Sixers ? If they’re free agents, what price tag is the most you would give them ? If they’re trade targets, how much would you give up ?

Expand full comment

Quite honestly haven't thought of it. So much is determined by which role players get overpaid and then which ones are left over for cheap.

Expand full comment

Might it be a blessing in disguise if we whiff on all of the rumored FA/trade targets? Or are we totally screwed?

Expand full comment

I do not find it to be a blessing, but I don't think Morey will overspend on what he feels like the wrong guy is.

Expand full comment

Don't think we're totally screwed but definitely wouldn't call it a "blessing in disguise." I'm a coward so I'll almost always be in favor of can-kicking in favor of something better possibly coming along, but I don't think Daryl can afford to go the whole season without making a big move -- so that's putting a whole lot of pressure on a perfect-fitting star to both shake loose at the deadline and be available at the ideal price for the Sixers. At a minimum, I think Plans A through C or D for Daryl this summer have to be going all in on one or two guys.

Free agency jigsaw: you have to give 2 years, $80 million to either Harden or Tobias to return. Who do you choose?

LOL. Harden unfortunately.

Eh we got a decent trade return for an expensive James Harden once before maybe we could do it again

Are we looking at the wrong Bridges? What about Miles? Feels like he'd slot in nicely as a 3rd scorer on a good team.

Expand full comment

He would be a great player and would fit well and I don't feel like doing that podcast with Mike to be honest.

Expand full comment

Would you prefer Morey to bring in a third star or build around Embiid/Maxey with higher end role players?

Expand full comment

The high end role players cost as much as the stars. If you're asking me if I'd rather have OG or PG and they're about the same cost (they will be), anyone who picks OG is basically wrong.

Expand full comment

My ideal targets are guys like Bridges or Anunoby that sorta split the difference between "star" and "high-end role player."

Expand full comment

Guys, we’ve already heard a lot about what “might” happen this offseason and the NBA is somehow still going. Given that there are a limited number of potential options to be the third guy (PG, LeBron, Ingram, DeRozan, LaVine, Bridges, Markkanen, none, etc.), what do you think is the most likely scenario that unfolds this offseason if you had to guess using what you know right now?

Expand full comment

This seems like cheating but I don't think there is a most likely scenario.

Spike, I think you mentioned in a pod that you had a hundred hats or so. 1. How do you store/display them? and 2. Do you have a favorite?

Expand full comment

I wish I had the space to display them. I have these New Era cap carries that hold I think 30 hats or so. I have I think four of them. I have a few favorites but it changes as time goes. I would say one of my top faves is my FAMU hat. I've worn it a lot on the pod.

In theory - what are the biggest differences between a team built around Maxey #1 option and Jo #2 and a team built around Jo #1 and Maxey #2?

Expand full comment

I think probably the only real difference is in how many plays are designed as post-ups and how many as high pick-and-rolls / pick-and-pops, particularly in the fourth quarter. (And I do think we'll start to see a concentrated shift from the former to the latter pretty soon, maybe as soon as next season.)

What’s your thoughts on Larry Brown’s belief (John Clark’s podcast)that the mistake the sixers made with AI was trying to pair him with another star? Obviously that never worked (Weber, Kukoc, etc,) and he said that the 01 team that surrounded AI with role players is the method that the sixers should use with Joel. So instead of “star hunting” the sixers spend their capital on 4 who can rebound and shoot (Joel is not a good rebounder because of his knee - jumping is risking injury) and shooters/athletes. No PG13, rather Lynch, McKie, Snow etc.

Expand full comment

I mean the problem here was Iverson, not how they tried to build the team with another star. I think they showed quite obviously in the Lakers series that Iverson plus role players wasn't going to get you a title. Also, Iverson did pretty well with Melo in Denver. I think the issue was that all of the stars that the Sixers paired with Iverson were cooked.

I think the tricky thing with what you're trying to do is that the players you're discussing are also expensive because they're in high demand. Let's take Bridges as the ideal of this right? People are talking about trading 3-4 firsts for him and he'll likely get a max deal when it's ready. Josh Hart is making 20 million a year, and by the way, you'll miss on as many of these guys as you nail when you're signing them on the open market. Bruce Brown got 25 million a year.
