Amen on the McCain piece! The gap in seeming perception with VJ is kinda wild to me as well. I get VJ has a higher prospect/pick pedigree. But once there is an NBA sample on McCain shouldn’t that mostly go out the window?

To give two specifics on the thought process there:

1. I would bet some amount of money that, by the time VJ hits the rookie McCain 23 game mark, McCain’s rookie out put will be significantly better offensively than VJ’s. Should that matter? Yes! I guess I hope I’m wrong and VJ is amazing the next 8 games. But I don’t think I am.

2. Even over a small sample, players who do what McCain did as a rookie, for any stretch, is basically just a list of future stars. I mentioned earlier the prospect and draft slot prior favoring VJ. But more data should let us massively update that prior! McCain’s rookie output against NBA players vs. VJ’s college tape. I’m sorry, I love VJ and thought he was probably the right pick, but it’s not even close.

So it seems VJ is considered the better prospect mainly because people aren’t updating their priors, which is bad! (The size/defense is definitely another component, as is the McCain injury causing him to miss the beginning of the season but I think those are smaller than the main thing, obviously)

Lastly, I’m kinda surprised more people aren’t loudly annoyed and baffled by another Sixers injury curse. McCain had a meniscus surgery (yes the more involved one but still) not an ACL or an Achilles! Why is it still an issue a year later!? That is incredibly not normal for this injury which normally has an 8-9 months recovery for athletes. WTF is going on!?

Great article! I’m not so worried about McCain after the heat game. He’ll get it back but I do agree that the way the team is dealing with the situation and morey’s interview is quite odd and a bit concerning
