Daryl Morey is out as President Of Basketball Operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, as you may have heard. Nick Nurse is remaining the head coach, as you also may have heard.

I remember a surreal moment in October of 2020, when I was on the air at 94WIP, arguing with Billy King about the Sixers hire of Doc Rivers. I told Billy that the hiring of Rivers didn’t mean anything to me, I wanted them to go out and hire Daryl Morey.
It is rarely the case in Sixers Land, but I got exactly what I wanted. The Sixers hired Morey. He really shoved it up my ass with the Jared McCain trade, didn’t he?
We first had Daryl on the Ricky when was running the Rockets, and he was stuck in The Bubble in Disney World. I truly don’t even remember how it happened. I’ve never listened to it. I don’t even know what we talked about.
Since then, he’s been on the Ricky like ten times, regardless of whether we were ripping him or praising him. He was always very fair to us, even if we were tormenting him. He recognized how die-hard Ricky listeners are, and I know always appreciated the opportunity to talk directly to you.
The guy running the Sixers let us replay his hug with James Harden with him over and over again while demanding he analyze whether he wanted the hug more than Harden did.
I will save my takes about the move and his tenure for the podcast (I have many of these. But I will say here I think he is good at his job, has always been generous with his time and otherwise with us, and I am glad he had the job.
It didn’t end up with a championship, or the Finals, or past the second round, but we did finally beat a good team in the playoffs.
We’ll get him on with us eventually so I can yell at him about Jared McCain. He owes us that at least.
