It isn’t abnormal for days, weeks, months, even years to go by without hearing much from D’Angelo. Since his debut ‘Brown Sugar; in 1996, he’s only released two more full length albums. He’s one of those artists that didn’t release a lot of music, but somehow was ubiquitous because of his greatness, because of his influence.
D’Angelo passed away last week after a battle with pancreatic cancer. It hit me pretty hard. One, because D’Angelo was awesome. The other, because he was only a couple of years older than me. (This was followed up by the passing of Limp Bizkit bass player Sam Rivers, who died just a year younger than me).
In any case, we did a new Carl Landry Record Club podcast about life, death, and D’Angelo, with a specific focus on Brown Sugar. The podcast is below, I hope you enjoy it.
