The Opening Tip
Hello & Happy Almost Weekend - It's the Corner Three!
$150 To Reserve Your Trip To Los Angeles
We are going to LA in March to see Sixers vs. Clippers. We're going to see a player who is his own system live and in person. We'll be there for three nights over a weekend, stay at a great hotel near the arena, have a couple of sweet parties, all sit together, be weird, and everybody gets a t-shirt.
Do not miss this one. Reserve your spot here, and if you need a custom package (no travel, travel from somewhere other than Philly), email joe@phansofphilly.com. If you can't pay for the trip all at once, totally cool, Joe will give you an easy payment plan.
Oh Yeah, The Sixers
The Return of the King
Adam Silver took all the goodwill earned from an incredible in-season tournament and bet the house on it yesterday in a very odd, actually, extremely fucking odd interview on the Pat McAfee show, weaving in war and strong armies when discussing the NBA's place in international diplomacy. Which definitely got me thinking, who are my top 10 Sixers/Sixers adjacent enemies of the state? Hmmm
10. Eddie Jordan
09. Chuck Okafor
08. Tony DiLeo
07. Every Celtic
06. Danny Ainge
05. GM Brett Brown (Not Coach Brett Brown! Real ones know the difference)
04. Ben Simmons
03. The Disney Bubble
02. Colangelo Family Trust
01. Adam Silver
Spike's Corner... I Don't Care How Nice Tobias Is
Every week, Spike or Mike is going to write a column for the #CornerThree. It's Spike's week, and he's retiring the "nice guy" disclaimer about Tobias Harris
Tobias Harris has been on the Sixers for three decades. Each year, he's earned more money than he did the previous year. His father is the greatest agent known to man. We traded ten first round picks for him, and also Landry Shamet. Against all odds, this is the final year of his contract. To celebrate, I'm no longer couching any criticism with a disclaimer that it is "not personal" or "a great guy but."
Tobias earned nearly $500,000 to play last night's game against the Wizards. That is not hyperbole, that's basically what he earned. Tobias gets his full salary whether the Sixers make the playoffs or not, so if you divide the salary by a full 82 game season, that's what he makes for each one.
Tobias, who may or may not be a nice guy (NO DISCLAIMERS!!) was able to drop six whole points, attempt one three point shot, all while playing some of the worst defense I've seen since the Jrue trade. This coming from a guy who will take any moment to remind us that he is undervalued by casual fans, and whose dad will remind Keith Pompey that he is a primary scorer that is miscast. Six fucking points! If PJ Tucker was still on the Sixers, Tobias would have outscored by him by four points.
I'm all for athletes making as much as they can. God bless them. The market will bear the salaries, and without them there is no sport. But this time, I don't know, maybe some of it should go to charity or something. While you're grinding away at your 40+ hour work week today, just try not to focus on the fact that Harris got half a million dollars last night for the most depressing cardio session in team history. It's impossible! Is he one of the 400 best basketball players on the planet? Yes. Is it still infuriating? YES!!!
I'm just not taking the time out of my day to remind anyone, ever again, that he's a nice guy. I will not allow Mike to note, while criticizing him, that he's a "good locker room guy." I do not care anymore if he reads. I am thankful he came on the podcast, but I don't care anymore. Fine, he has a nice smile, but it doesn't matter.
We do not have to be nice to him before we said he did a bad job. It's over. He is not a child, he is a grown adult who got a contract to pay him the most money possible for the most years possible that the league would allow. I do not have to thank him for not being a murderer. As Don Draper once said, "that's what the money is for."
Peace, Love and Thanks Check on your friends, Prepare for the bounce back
