5 Questions For the 7- (Maybe Soon-to-be-8-) Win Sixers
Is one team even allowed to win this much? Zo investigates.
1. What are some positives you noticed in the last few wins?
Two big things: One, the team is getting considerably more healthy and two — probably a direct correlation — they’re playing with much more spark. Joel Embiid came back Sunday, looking a bit more like his normal self, Paul George, offensive-lineman knee brace and all, looked comfy, and my Pride and Joy Mr. Maxey did his best as usual. One thing that also stands out is they just seem happier — and for a team looking for anything to cling to while climbing out of this hole, that matters.
2. Any one player who’s consistently stood out during this small run?
Charismatic, life-loving rookies aside, Guerschon Yabusele — man, what a goddamn treat. His second NBA stint for sure has been an absolute success. He had an amazing Olympics run, which included giving Team USA all it could handle and he vowed that if he made it back to the league he would make it count — and he’s done just that. I really hope this team gets it together enough to make a playoff run of some sort, because he’s exactly the kind of guy with the kind of heart and skill you want on your side when shit gets tight.
3. What’s your Nick Nurse outlook?
He’s been better, not a lot better but has definitely been pushing the right buttons at least. This is also a reminder of how much Joel Embiid means. Everything else aside, he makes up and covers up for SO MUCH on both ends, and that includes what the coach schemes.
4. Is Tyrese Maxey OK?
He’s getting there. Unexpectedly shouldering the load of a team in a downward spiral can be a lot. He needs his other two co-stars to string it together more than anyone else.
5. Do you think the Sixers will be active in the trade market?
I think Daryl Morey will do his due diligence and pounce if there’s a cost-controlled young-side-of-30 wing (or wings) available. They dont’t HAVE to trade K.J. Martin, but important to note that his salary is uniquely structured so that it sweetens the pot not only for the Sixers but for the team trading for him should things go that route, in the form of him being treated as an expiring contract.
