You never disappoint. Well if you're on Twitter maybe once in a blue moon, but other than that, never.
When we had to cancel Flip The Switch, I was bummed we wouldn't get to be shoulder to shoulder with everyone at Underground Arts, bummed I wouldn't get to take a picture of a line around the venue waiting to pay $5 to take a picture with SixersAdam holding up a giant federal (??) driver's license, but most of all bummed that it didn't seem like we'd be able to live up to the promise we've made to our charities (I was not really bummed that I didn't have to prep a live show, however).
Starting with the third Lottery Party, when we starting selling shirts for more than $5 (thanks Cheesesteaktees for taking a massive loss on Lottery Party II with the shirts), we turned the event into a benefit for our chosen charities for the year. So when we made last year's Lottery Party the final version, we knew we needed to find a way to still raise a bunch of money. That idea was Flip The Switch. And then Covid-19 happened.
The fact that we were able to raise nearly $20,000 (which is right around the same amount we raised at the Lottery Parties) by sitting on Zoom for five hours and talking to all of our friends and sponsors is incredible. The fact that more than half of it came just from donations (not from merch, or auction items), is a testament to the fact that more than wanting stupid t-shirts, you just want to help (though you do like stupid t-shirts, stupid digital EPs and stupid posters it turns out).
So thank you. So much. Not just for the last seven years of making sure we keep doing this podcast, but for showing out every time we ask. They will write lots of books about this era of Sixers basketball, but the real story of the last seven years of Sixers basketball has nothing to do with the team. It's just about you. Your dedication to each other, community, support, and of course the t-shirts. It is an honor to both Mike and I that we get a lot of the attention that it's you that deserves. Ask any of the authors writing these books, I tell them the real story is you.
We thank the charities who will benefit from this, the Providence Animal Center, Coded By Kids, and Philabundance. As I've said numerous times, regardless of what these organizations "do," they are run by people. So when you support them, you're supporting jobs, health care, putting food on the table for people. These three organizations save lives, human and otherwise. The people who work and volunteer at these places are truly noble. We love you.
We thank our local, small business sponsors, who have supported us for years. Aside from the advertising, they support us just by saying "we believe in you and this community." Please, please, do what you can to support them in this time of need, as this is toughest for small business. Buy jewelry from LL Pavorsky, mead from The Colony Meadery, Dealware beach real estate from Adam Ksebe, legal advice (especially personal injury) from Kornblau & Kornblau, real dog beds from Big Barker, and t-shirts, hoodies, sneakers, snowboards and skateboards from Kinetic Skateboarding. We love all of you and we're going to do what we can to help you through this.
Thanks to our merch company Cold Cuts, who is going through a tough time as most of what they do is band merch for shows, which isn't happening. And of course Rich and everyone at Underground Arts, who also, for some reason, keep inviting us back. You can support the GoFundMe from the staff here. Rich, you're the man and I know you're going to make Bryan proud.
Thank you to the musicians who made the Tony T EP, which I didn't have the heart to stop selling at midnight. We're going to sell it forever because I love it so much, and it'll always just go to charity. Eliza Hardy Jones, Dave Hartley, Matt from Mt. Joy, you guys are amazing. Down for the dumbest of our dumb shit. This thing is hitting musicians hard, so go seek out their music, buy their merch and see them when they're back on tour. And obviously a huge thank you to Amos Lee, and Jaron Olevsky, who have now made two Ricky theme songs, and this (shout out to shitbag Heat fan, and Amos manager Perry). I've mentioned that I'm not sure how Amos actually feels about this being as big a bit as I've made it (though I am sure he adores Tony T), but like it or not, Amos Lee and Tony T (and Joe and Doris Vallone) are part of us. Amos, you are a great guy and an excellent friend.
And they're not small or local, but man Draft Kings Sportsbook has been down with everything we've wanted to do and will continue to. They're not just buying ads, they're supporting Fly The Process, and this event, which they quickly and without a second thought dropped a bunch of money to sponsor to make sure all of the money raised went to charity. Thanks Ethan and the crew there.
Thanks to the guests who took part of their Sunday of doing nothing to do nothing with us: Godner, Chris Ryan, John Gonzalez, Alyssa Litman, Andrew Sharp the piece of shit, and Don Steele. And Kent and Cris, who showed me how to use Zoom!
Last but definitely not least, Team Ricky. Mike, who is the person I've talked to most in the world over the last seven years most likely, and I appreciate more than he knows. AU, a great writer and an excellent soul with the worst internet, SixersAdam who we hired before his 18th birthday and is more well liked than any of us, Abbie (known on the internet as @digrupert on Twitter and IG), whose art adds a smile to everything we do, will be so famous one day she'll regret all of this (also calls me boss) and doesn't even like sports, Tanner who always finds a way to draw what's in my mind, and Zainab who has added so much to our live shows with her art, and maybe one day will listen to me and stop reading Twitter replies.
Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Rebel, who gifted me with my love of dogs and constant suspicion of people, and my wife Val who has let me try to make Rebel famous.
I know this is like an Oscars speech but this is what I do.
We did it again, all of us. Won't ever forget it. Now go stay the fuck inside and wash your hands.
